Fishy Business

Whilst trawling through the Grocers Top 100 Biggest Brands in Britain, I made a shocking discovery(no not that we have really bad diets in britain), something much bigger and more shocking....

It is possible to max out in marketing?

Is it that no amount of revenue spend on advertising, rebranding, viral campaigns is going to make any difference to your product?, is it possible to reach the end of the (fishing) line?. How do i know this you might ask? the answer is Fish, yes believe it or not but Fish.

In 41st place with sales of £147.8m is Princes Fish, in 42nd place with sales of £145.4m is John West Fish. A simple can, limited branding space and two products matched in quality in the eyes of the consumer a mere £2.4M apart.

What would you do as your next step?

Does one of them need to get aggressive like the latest summertime advert from Pepsi
this is brilliant and bold but does it fit the Fish market.

They could look to NPD but John West only made small grounds with their 'no drain, less mess' concept and i'd say this is a pretty big jump in concept

My suggestion would be to look at packaging and how they can be faster, better, cheaper. The EU Commission has proposed major changes to the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), designed to cut waste and stop overfishing in European waters which I think will massively raise the price of canned fish. The winner will be the company that doesn't pass a cost rise onto the consumer. Get your Procurement and marketing teams working together looking at solutions such as connected processes, colour harmonisation and supplier Implants to save costs to your packaging business

Will the Prince become a Pauper?
Will John West pack up and move East?

Packaged, wrapped and slightly opinionated
